How to play

  1. 1

Tap the pads with as many fingers as you like.

  2. 2

The middle of a pad hits harder than the edge.

  3. 3

    On a keyboard: Q W E / A S D / Z X C, and Space is the kick.

Keyboard layout

The nine pads map to three rows of keys: Q W E, A S D and Z X C, in the same layout as the pads on screen. Space is the kick, so your thumb keeps the beat while your fingers play the rest.

Play softer or harder

Hit the middle of a pad for a harder hit, nearer the edge for a softer one. That's how ghost notes on the snare and accents on the hi-hat come out.

A first beat to play

  1. 1

Turn on the metronome at around 90 BPM, four beats per bar.

  2. 2

    Play the closed hi-hat on every beat: 1, 2, 3, 4.

  3. 3

Add the kick on beats 1 and 3.

  4. 4

Add the snare on beats 2 and 4. That's the basic rock beat.

  5. 5

Hit Record, play it for a few bars, and save the take.

Questions

Which drums are in the kit?

Kick, snare, closed and open hi-hat, two toms, a floor tom, a crash and a ride cymbal.

Can I play with several fingers at once?

Yes — on a touch screen every finger counts, so you can hit the kick and the hi-hat together.

Can I use my drum beat in a DAW?

Save it and download the MIDI. Drums are on the General MIDI drum channel, so any drum instrument in GarageBand, Logic, Ableton or FL Studio plays them.

Is there a delay when I tap?

Browsers add a few milliseconds. Wired headphones keep it tight; Bluetooth headphones add the most delay.

Can I write my beat out as drum notation?

Yes. Save the beat, then export sheet music as PDF or MusicXML. Each drum sits on its usual line of the drum staff, with cross noteheads for the cymbals and hi-hat.

Is this drum kit free?

Yes. Playing and recording are free and need no account. Saving a beat to your account uses a few credits, and you get free credits every day you sign in.
