Floor plan symbols

Drawn at real size from above, so a door is 90 wide and a bed is 160 × 200.

How to read them

  • Doors show the leaf as a line and its swing as a dashed arc, so you can see which way it opens and how much room it needs.
  • Windows are drawn in the wall: outer sill, glass line, inner sill.
  • Stairs have a walking line with an arrow pointing up and a break line where the plan cuts through the flight.
  • Furniture is drawn from above at its usual size, so you can check that a room actually fits it.
  • North arrow and scale bar tell the reader which way the plan faces and how big it is, even after it's been printed at a different size.

Questions

What do the dashed arcs on a floor plan mean?

The swing of a door: the path its leaf sweeps when it opens. It shows which side the hinges are on and keeps you from putting furniture where the door would hit it. More in floor plan symbols explained.

Can I use these in my own plans?

Yes, for personal and commercial drawings, without credit.

How do I put them in a floor plan?

Open a symbol and press Use in a design, or pick it from the symbols panel inside the design tool. It lands at real size, so it fits your walls.
